Several years ago, I developed a deep desire to help the educational system of South Sudan. Many classrooms are poor learning centers – simple concrete structures with one black chalkboard in the front. The public school teachers often lack training and poorly paid ($7 per month). Much of the instruction is just rote-memorization.
So, I decided to get involved and help them. I developed a working relationship with the Ministry of Education and Instruction. I wrote, designed, and illustrated a supplemental educational workbooks for South Sudan. The workbook was Primary 4 Unit 2: Weather and Climate. It aligns with their national curriculum standards.
Once the workbook was designed, I emailed it to a commercial printer in Juba, South Sudan. There, they printed 500 copies of this workbook and I had a local person pick up the copies. Within one week, my “incountry helpers” had distributed the workbook to over 245 students across 7 schools in the Yei city region. The workbook is student-centered and full of engaging learning activities.
Below is the cover and the interiors of the workbook. The use of the cover photo was donated by Peter Canton, a renown photography of South Sudan.
